Project Result 1: Methodology Guidelines for the Implementation of OER-Based Online Collaborative Learning Courses

Project Result 1 (PR1) of the OER-CODEX project delivers a strategic and pedagogically grounded methodological framework for developing, facilitating, and evaluating online courses based on Open Educational Resources (OER)and collaborative learning models in higher education.

This output is a practical guide for educators, instructional designers, and institutions who seek to create learner-centred, high-quality online learning experiences. Drawing on best practices in open education, digital pedagogy, and instructional design, the guidelines are tailored to support the creation of online courses where learners also become co-creators of OER.

  • Didactical Framework: Outlines the design of courses with clearly defined target groups, learning outcomes, instructional approaches, and social interaction formats.
  • OER Production & Licensing: Offers guidance on producing, licensing, and integrating OER using Creative Commons frameworks.
  • Collaborative Learning: Details the design of tasks that promote group work and peer collaboration, resulting in learner-generated OER content.
  • Gamification & Engagement: Explores techniques such as gamified activities, icebreakers, and the use of learning analytics to motivate and support learners.
  • Course Piloting & Implementation: Provides a step-by-step approach for piloting courses, coordinating across institutions, and gathering feedback from learners and moderators.
  • Certification & Recognition: Defines a dual-certification model (attendance and achievement), supported by workload-based ECTS alignment (2 ECTS per course).
  • Quality Assurance: Establishes quality evaluation mechanisms for course content, learner engagement, and the OER outputs themselves.

This methodology is more than a how-to guide:
It empowers higher education teachers to act as multipliers, transferring digital competencies to peers while engaging students in active knowledge construction. Through collaborative activities, learners co-develop content that remains openly accessible in a central OER Repository, fostering a culture of openness, reusability, and sustainability in education.

By combining pedagogical innovation with practical implementation tools, the guidelines pave the way for a scalable and adaptable model of open, collaborative learning that can be applied across institutions, disciplines, and national borders.
